Zhenfang Zhang – Erhu & Peter Schindler – Piano

Playing the video connects to YouTube.

When the Chinese erhu (a two-stringed fiddle played resting on the knee) meets the European piano, musical horizons full of surprises unfold.

The musician and erhu virtuoso Zhenfang Zhang and the composer and pianist Peter Schindler share a long-standing artistic friendship. Schindler has written works especially for the erhu that take the instrument beyond its customary boundaries.

In creative dialogue, East and West, tradition and modernity merge. The result is a sound woven from Asian melody, European polyphony and melodic, jazz-inflected structures – colourful, sensuous and richly faceted.

Depending on the occasion, percussion, bass, cello or saxophone broaden the palette of sound – yet the heart of the duo always remains clearly felt.

BAMBOO SILK tells stories full of contrast and spontaneity, in which inspiration and improvisation come alive.
